The Holiday Conversation: How to Talk to Your Parents About Independent Living

Nov 2, 2026 | Featured, Independent Living

The holidays have a way of bringing families together…and helping everyone notice things they may have missed throughout the year.

Maybe your parents mention that keeping up with the house has become exhausting. Perhaps they’ve stopped traveling because they’re worried about leaving the property unattended. Or maybe you notice they’re spending more time alone than they used to.

These changes don’t necessarily mean your parents need daily care. They may simply be signs that maintaining their current lifestyle is becoming more work than it’s worth.

If independent living has crossed your mind, the holidays can be a good time to begin the conversation. The key is approaching it as a discussion about possibilities, not a decision that’s already been made.

Choose the Right Time

A conversation about the future deserves more than a few minutes between opening presents or serving dessert. Look for a quiet, relaxed moment when everyone has time to talk without feeling rushed. Whether it’s over coffee one morning or during a walk after dinner, choosing the right setting can help everyone feel more comfortable.

If siblings are involved, it’s often helpful to have the conversation together so everyone hears the same information and can offer support.

Start With Questions, Not Solutions

It can be tempting to begin with everything you’ve noticed. Instead, start by asking your parents how they’re feeling about life at home. Giving your parents the opportunity to share their own experiences helps the conversation feel collaborative instead of confrontational.

Questions like these can open the door naturally:

  • How are you feeling about taking care of the house these days?
  • Is there anything that’s become more difficult than it used to be?
  • If you could change one thing about your daily routine, what would it be?
  • Have you ever thought about what life might look like if you didn’t have to worry about home maintenance?

Focus on Lifestyle, Not Limitations

Framing the conversation around possibilities often feels much more encouraging than focusing on challenges. Instead of emphasizing what your parents can no longer do, focus on what they might enjoy doing if everyday responsibilities took up less of their time. You might talk about:

  • Traveling more often
  • Meeting new friends
  • Enjoying fitness or hobby classes
  • Having more opportunities to socialize
  • Living without worrying about yard work or home repairs

Listen for What Matters Most

Every family has different priorities. For one parent, staying socially active may be most important. Another may value having more time to travel. Someone else may simply be tired of maintaining a large home.

As you listen, pay attention to what’s driving their concerns. Understanding what matters most will help you explore communities that align with the lifestyle they want, not just the services they offer.

Explore the Idea Together

Visiting a community often changes people’s perceptions. Many are surprised to discover that independent living looks much different than they expected.

If your parents seem open to learning more, avoid turning the conversation into a commitment. Instead, suggest exploring their options together.

You might say: “What if we just toured a few communities so we know what’s available? There’s no pressure to make a decision.”

Let Your Parents Lead the Decision

Not everyone is ready to make a move right away. Some parents may be excited by the idea. Others may need months (or even longer) to think it through.

That’s perfectly normal. You don’t need to convince them entirely during a single holiday visit. It’s to begin an ongoing conversation while everyone has the opportunity to participate.

Whenever possible, your parents should remain at the center of the decision-making process. Encourage them to ask questions, tour communities, compare amenities, and decide what feels like the best fit for their lifestyle.

Planning ahead gives them the freedom to make thoughtful choices instead of waiting until a future event limits their options.

Think Beyond This Holiday Season

The conversation you’re having isn’t just about the next few months. It’s about the years ahead.

It’s a big conversation to have, but starting the discussion now allows your family to think proactively about the kind of lifestyle your parents want while they can still make decisions on their own terms. Even if they aren’t ready to move today, you’ve opened the door for future conversations without waiting for a crisis to force the issue.

If your family is beginning to explore independent living, Priority Life Care is here to help. Contact your local community to schedule a tour, ask questions, and discover how independent living can offer more freedom, fewer responsibilities, and new opportunities to enjoy every stage of life.

When your family gathers in Palm Coast, Florida, ask your parents which local routines they would like to carry into the future. Time at Waterfront Park or meals at European Village may be part of what makes Flagler County feel like home. Bringing those preferences into a discussion about Las Palmas Sky Active Living can help the conversation feel personal, reassuring, and centered on their choices.

My mother-in-law loved this place. She was treated great by all staff and she liked her time in the dining room. In her two years there she gained many friendships. Thank goodness the staff encouraged her to take part in activities because that's were she met many of her friends. I know many residents will remember her for years.

Las Palmas is a clean and well run facility with caring staff and good management. My mother-in-law lived there for four years. She enjoyed the social contact and didn’t feel so alone. Despite being a somewhat shy person, she quickly made many friends. She also enjoyed the meals and not having to cook. It was the right choice for her.

I am writing this on behalf of my grandma, Lorna. She moved initially to Florida from Peoria, Illinois to be closer to family. She still had a tight knit group of lifelong friends from Church that she went to kindergarten with, so was upset to leave but hopeful for finding new friendship yet be closer to family. Initially we brought her to Boca Raton/Parkland area in South Florida and she found the people to be hurtful, cliquey, and was frequently given the cold shoulder. A few months later my mother and stepfather moved up to the Palm Coast, and brought grandma with them. SHE LOVES IT. When we moved her in there were several family members of residents that said how lucky we were to have found “the best one around.” Grandma loves the food, loves the warm hearted people, is shocked by the unexpected competence and responsiveness of the staff, and couldn’t be happier in her new home. It has been about 6 months since her move and she feels closer to the people there than she could ever have hoped. There are tons of activities like chair volleyball and organized events for the residents to participate in and and really look forward to. Grandma’s highlight of her day is always her post dinner Rummikub game with the gals. Another treat is that it is so close to the space coast, so if there is a rocket launch scheduled I’ll give grandma a call and tell her to walk out her front door to watch it with her friends. Very nice place, couldn’t feel more comfortable with the hands that my grandma is in and the people who are in her life.

I’ve been living here for one month now, and the property is very well maintained and housekeeping is impeccable. The staff are extremely attentive and the dining area provides 3 delicious chef-prepared meals. There are other amenities for social interaction such as art classes, exercise and more…. The residents here are kind and considerate and look out for each other. The folks here at Las Palmas made me feel like part of their family.
