Discover Something New: Unlock New Skills and Passions at Any Age

There’s a common misconception that learning is only for the young, but life’s school bell never rings for the last time. In fact, one study found that seniors who engaged in activities like photography, drawing, and singing were not only able to boost
their cognitive scores for memory and attention – but developed cognitive abilities comparable to adults 50 years younger.

Those findings aren’t unique, and you can easily enjoy the benefits yourself. If you’re ready to explore a new hobby, whether that’s painting, learning a new language, or starting a new exercise routine, you’re never too old to do so.

The time to try something new is now – here’s why.

Language Learning – Think you’re too old to learn a new language? Think again!

Taking up a new language offers countless cognitive health benefits while also opening up the door to different cultures and new relationships.

And you don’t have to travel to another country to do it. You can learn any language you’d like, whether it’s Spanish, French, or even Mandarin, by taking online courses like Duolingo or Babbel. These sites offer lessons that you can take at your own pace.

Artistic Pursuits – If you’ve always had an eye for beauty, why not channel it into some form of art?

Whether your passions lie in photography, painting, drawing, or even good old arts and crafts, they offer a wonderful way to express yourself while keeping your mind engaged.

Photography, painting, or arts and crafts offer wonderful ways to express yourself and keep your mind engaged. You don’t need to be Picasso to enjoy painting or composing a masterpiece. All you need is a canvas, some paints, and a bit of imagination (or whatever medium of choice yours might be!).

Try one of these 10 University Art Classes You Can Take for Free Online including an intro to photography where you can use your smartphone.

Musical Adventures – Ever considered playing an instrument?

Believe it or not, you can speak another language without learning another language – because music is a universal language that transcends boundaries.

From guitar to piano or even simple vocal lessons, music can be an incredibly joyful activity that enhances your daily life. There are countless tutorials on YouTube and apps like Yousician that provide step-by-step lessons perfectly tailored to beginners.

Physical Activity

Staying active is the key to maintaining health and happiness. But exercise doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym. Find something you love doing, and do it often!

Whether it’s yoga or dancing, tai chi or weightlifting, any kind of movement counts. You could even join a local dance class or participate in online sessions from home! Check out AARP for free online exercise classes.

Culinary Skills

Cooking is an essential life skill that can be as creative as it is practical. Why not try out new recipes and cuisines?

My mother-in-law loved this place. She was treated great by all staff and she liked her time in the dining room. In her two years there she gained many friendships. Thank goodness the staff encouraged her to take part in activities because that's were she met many of her friends. I know many residents will remember her for years.

Las Palmas is a clean and well run facility with caring staff and good management. My mother-in-law lived there for four years. She enjoyed the social contact and didn’t feel so alone. Despite being a somewhat shy person, she quickly made many friends. She also enjoyed the meals and not having to cook. It was the right choice for her.

I am writing this on behalf of my grandma, Lorna. She moved initially to Florida from Peoria, Illinois to be closer to family. She still had a tight knit group of lifelong friends from Church that she went to kindergarten with, so was upset to leave but hopeful for finding new friendship yet be closer to family. Initially we brought her to Boca Raton/Parkland area in South Florida and she found the people to be hurtful, cliquey, and was frequently given the cold shoulder. A few months later my mother and stepfather moved up to the Palm Coast, and brought grandma with them. SHE LOVES IT. When we moved her in there were several family members of residents that said how lucky we were to have found “the best one around.” Grandma loves the food, loves the warm hearted people, is shocked by the unexpected competence and responsiveness of the staff, and couldn’t be happier in her new home. It has been about 6 months since her move and she feels closer to the people there than she could ever have hoped. There are tons of activities like chair volleyball and organized events for the residents to participate in and and really look forward to. Grandma’s highlight of her day is always her post dinner Rummikub game with the gals. Another treat is that it is so close to the space coast, so if there is a rocket launch scheduled I’ll give grandma a call and tell her to walk out her front door to watch it with her friends. Very nice place, couldn’t feel more comfortable with the hands that my grandma is in and the people who are in her life.

I’ve been living here for one month now, and the property is very well maintained and housekeeping is impeccable. The staff are extremely attentive and the dining area provides 3 delicious chef-prepared meals. There are other amenities for social interaction such as art classes, exercise and more…. The residents here are kind and considerate and look out for each other. The folks here at Las Palmas made me feel like part of their family.
